The 2016 Philadelphia Phillies season featured a win-loss record of 77-85, significantly better than the 63-99 2015 season. Due to an influx of young players, such as Maikel Franco and Nick Williams, the team significantly improved.
Season summary[]
The Phillies played their first game of the season on April 4, against the Cincinnati Reds. They won by a score of 6-1, with winning pitcher Jeremy Hellickson throwing five innings of shutout ball. However, the Phillies dropped their next two games. Throughout April, the Phillies struggled mightily, to a record of 8-20. May was slightly better, but struggles continued. At the all-star break, the Phillies were the second-worst team in baseball with a record of 35-57. In the second half, the team went 42-28 - a significant sign of improvement that would carry on into the next several seasons. Maikel Franco lead the team with 33 home runs and 109 runs batted in, Odubel Herrera led with a .308 batting average and 18 stolen bases, and Aaron Nola lead the team with 14 wins. Young prospect Nick Williams hit .293 with 11 home runs and 12 stolen bases in his brief stint after joining the team in late July. However, top prospect J.P. Crawford struggled in his brief September call-up hitting just .225 with one homer and 5 runs batted in.
